Lombardy is a borderland at the foot of the Pre-Alps, a land of water, valleys and castles and a symbol of harmony between man and the environment. Seen from above, Lombardy resembles a palette of colours: mountains, valleys, forests, lakes and rivers. A land of water that offers bright color variations to the eyes in all seasons. There are almost a dozen lakes, such as Lake Varese and parts of Lake Maggiore, Lake Ceresio and Lake Verbano, into which numerous rivers and streams such as the Olona and Ticino flow.

The area is mountainous in the north, becomes flatter in the middle with its hills and valleys, before flowing into the plain in the south. The lush vegetation is embellished by villas surrounded by Italian or English style gardens, parks, towers and hilltop villages. The valleys are criss-crossed by ancient paths that can be discovered on foot, by bike or on horseback, always without haste.
